Adeela's Story

"When I first arrived in the UK, I could not find cricket in Manchester but I was determined to bring the passion I have for cricket into this community. Cricket teaches discipline and builds confidence - you carry yourself differently when you have those.

For girls in our community, taking part in sports has many barriers and perceived risks but because I had good connections in the community, many parents allowed their children to come and play cricket.

I could see there were some incredible girls playing and I was determined to give them and my daughters a way to continue. I contacted Wicketz who welcomed me in and made things very easy for me to coach at Old Trafford.

Being involved in cricket from a very young age has given me this confidence that I can achieve what I want to. Coaching with Wicketz has built on that - I know I'm doing great in so many aspects of life, including being a good coach. That brings me confidence and a sense of achievement - all positive vibes that are so good for my mental health and wellbeing, and I feel that I am a good role model for my girls.

I can see the people in my community respect and trust me and it makes me really proud that they entrust their children to me to make a difference to them, giving them confidence whilst having a joyful time.

Cricket has helped me - if I had the opportunities you are giving the girls here, I would have achieved great things - played for Pakistan's women's team or been in charge of a big business!

Girls from our background don't often feel empowered. Getting involved in Wicketz is helping change perceptions of what they can expect from their lives - they can dream big and can achieve it."
