Sir Alastair Cook visits Wicketz project in Luton

Earlier this week (23 August), 34 girls from across our Wicketz project in Luton joined together for their first summer women's and girls cricket festival at Icknield Recreation Ground.

It was a day to remember for the young people taking part and a special visit from England cricket legend, Sir Alastair Cook, made sure it was an experience that will be cherished for years to come.

Keen to get involved and see what Wicketz is all about, the former England captain took it upon himself to run a few batting and catching drills before taking time to speak to the aspiring young cricketers.

The Wicketz programme, delivered in 17 locations across the UK, provides a free, safe and inclusive environment for young people to enjoy sport in areas where opportunities are harder to come by. The project in Luton has been going from strength to strength over the years with female participation growing from 13% to 21% in just four years, a reflection of the work done to encourage girls to join the programme which includes female only sessions and female coaches.

Take a look at the short video below to hear from Sir Alastair Cook and his thoughts on the impact Wicketz is having on communities like Luton.

"This gives opportunities for so many young people"
